Phase I Early Orthodontic Treatment

Evaluations and treatment typically begin for children ages seven or eight. This initial phase of orthodontics helps prepare for later, more advanced treatment. Specialized appliances, expanders, spacers, and headgear are some of the devices used during this phase.

Early orthodontics guides the development of the bite and proactively treats misalignment. Issues such as crowding or spaces between teeth can result from genetics, an injury to the mouth, early or late loss of baby teeth, or thumb-sucking. This initial treatment helps make room for permanent adult teeth to erupt correctly and reduce the need for extensive procedures in the future. Depending on the initial treatment response, the need for braces could be reduced or even eliminated.

Phase II Orthodontic Treatment

Phase II is the "active" stage of orthodontic treatment. It can start as early as age 11 or any time after all permanent teeth are established. This phase follows a customized plan and uses various appliances for positioning the jaw and straightening teeth. Orthodontic devices include everything from headgear and palate expanders to traditional braces or clear aligners.

Traditional Metal Braces: Strong, metal brackets are bonded to teeth and connected by a metal archwire. Conventional braces use tension, which gradually increases to shift teeth into proper alignment. If your teeth and gums are free of decay or disease and you are in good overall health, you can qualify for orthodontic treatment at our offices.

While clear braces are an excellent alternative for some, conventional metal brackets may be the best solution for others. Anyone who finds it challenging to wear their removable aligners for the correct amount of time may benefit more from conventional treatment. Because metal braces affix to individual teeth for a set period, they are a dependable way to address moderate to complex issues and achieve predictable results.

Six Month Smiles: This method uses similar hardware to align teeth but focuses only on the teeth that are visible when you smile. White or clear brackets and wires can make the treatment more aesthetically pleasing. If you do not have severe bite issues, Six Month Smiles can give you the results you want in less time than other methods.

Invisalign: This popular option uses clear, customized trays that apply targeted pressure on your teeth to move them into the proper position. Invisalign aligners must be worn consistently for at least 22 hours a day and only removed for eating and cleaning your teeth. This method requires a serious commitment to following the treatment plan and is more appropriate for adults and responsible teens.

Maintaining Your Orthodontic Results

Even after orthodontic treatment with braces, teeth naturally want to shift back towards their original positioning. To prevent this, you will need a custom-made retainer to avoid orthodontic relapse.

Retainers are designed to your specific needs and crafted to fit comfortably over teeth. Depending on the severity of your original misalignment, you may need to wear your retainer all day at first and then only at night.

Can Braces Help TMJ Disorder?

Orthodontic treatment can adjust the alignment of your jaw and eliminate Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) pain. Braces are effective if your TMJ originates with malocclusion or bite misalignment due to stress, arthritis, or grinding. Our dentists can evaluate your jaw pain and determine if orthodontic treatment is your best option.
