Virtual planning and orthodontic devices can all work together to reduce the time spent wearing braces. With proper planning and preparation, we can simultaneously address aesthetics and alignment to improve results and avoid multiple procedures.

How Early Orthodontic Treatment Can Help Your Child

As children don't often develop perfectly aligned teeth, orthodontic appliances can coax teeth into alignment. It can also remove the need for full braces later or cut down the time needed to achieve ideal placement. The first phase of treatment can correct jaw growth to make sure it is appropriately aligned before beginning the other treatment stages.

Orthodontic Treatment Phases

The combination of phases is a reliable and successful method for treating moderate to severe malocclusion. Complete treatment can take between 6-30 months, depending on the need for corrections and your child's rate of healing. We can correct overbite, underbite, crossbite, and overcrowding. The straight, pleasing results are a significant boost to self-esteem and confidence.

The three significant stages include:

We inspect each tooth and its roots to create a comprehensive plan that will conservatively address as many issues as possible. This usually involves placing orthodontic appliances to improve the position of the bones in the jaw and face. Phase 1 appliances can be fixed or removable. Some of the most common devices include:

  • Functional Appliances
  • Specialized Retainers
  • Expanders
  • Spacers
  • Partial Braces
  • Orthodontic Headgear

Traditional braces, headgear, or even clear braces may be part of this phase, depending on the specific goals. This phase begins after most or all permanent teeth have erupted, usually when your child is eleven or twelve years of age.

This phase is the one most of us are familiar with and lasts 12-20 months. This stage also includes regular visits to our office for adjustments and ensuring everything is going as planned.

A customized retainer can stabilize everything and ensure that teeth do not revert to their original positions. Retainers require a specific length of treatment time and can be fixed or removable appliances.

When Phase 3 is complete, a retainer should be worn nightly from then on. As your child develops, their bodies change, and teeth can shift out of place, known as relapse. The retainer is a vital part of orthodontic treatment and ensures teeth remain in position as muscles, bones, and gums change over time.

Orthodontic Treatment Designed Especially for Teens

In the not-so-distant past, the teenage years used to be synonymous with a mouth full of metal brackets and wires. Today's options offer various choices that can make straightening teeth much more discreet and even fun!

We can combine advanced options such as clear brackets and colored wires as a fun way for teens to personalize their smile during treatment. We provide frequent cleanings and checkups during this time to keep teeth and gums clean and to ensure treatment remains on track.

Invisalign Clear Braces for Adults and Responsible Teens

woman holding invisalign clear bracesInvisalign® clear aligners use customized trays made of comfortable, nearly invisible plastic. Every two weeks, you’ll wear the newest set in a series of aligners to shift teeth into the desired position gradually. The trays have to be worn at least 22 hours every day, removed for meals, and cleaned regularly, so it is important to understand the commitment before choosing this treatment. Invisalign is ideal for teens and adults with mild to moderate alignment issues and the maturity to adhere to the recommended guidelines.

Six Month Smiles & Orthodontic Retreatment for Adults

Traditional braces and clear aligners can reposition all the teeth in an arch. Six Month Smiles focuses on treating only the teeth in your visible smile line. It does not treat complex problems like bite alignment or severe overcrowding.

The brackets and wires used in this treatment method are white or tooth-colored. They are more discreet than traditional braces, yet still apply strong, even pressure to straighten teeth quickly. Six Month Smiles can correct mild crowding, as well as issues that occur after years of not wearing a retainer after initial orthodontic treatment.

Treating TMJ Disorder with Braces

Temporomandibular joint disorders include conditions that affect the joints in your jaw, facial nerves, and muscles. Teeth clenching or grinding, stress, or arthritis can put pressure on the joint and cause inflammation. Bite issues trigger these conditions, and orthodontic treatment can improve alignment and lessen or eliminate TMJ pain.
